2020 Buccaneers draft picks: All of Tampa Bay’s selections, full NFL Draft results, team order

Despite having the fourteenth pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded up last minute for the No. 13 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to nab Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs. The Bucs are looking to add protection for their new prized QB, Tom Brady, and Wirfs’ background as a wrestler has helped inform his game to make him a dominant presence on the field.

They added another wideout to their already-stacked receiving corps by securing Tyler Johnson in Round 5. While Johnson won’t see much playing time this season, he will be able to learn a thing or two from one of the greatest QBs of all time. The Buccaneers also took two running backs, Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Raymond Calais, in order to strengthen their rather thin backfield.

Tampa Bay turned its attention to defense both in the second round, and then in later rounds. While safety Antoine Winfield Sr.’s upside may be limited by a smaller frame, his high-end instincts, elite ball skills and competitiveness give him a high ceiling if he’s able to stay healthy. Khalil Davis has a motor and athleticism that gives him an advantage on the defensive line as a potentially explosive option for the Bucs. Rounding out the defensive haul was Chappelle Russell, a linebacker who has already suffered two ACL injuries but whose determination and resilience make him a player to root for.

With veteran QB Drew Brees signing on for another season with the New Orleans Saints, the team knew they needed to add to his protection. So, with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Saints padded the interior offensive line and secured a potential new snapper for Brees in Michigan’s Cesar Ruiz. Ruiz will toughen the line with his great physical ability and versatile production.

New Orleans also added Zack Baun, who played a hybrid edge role at Wisconsin but may transition to an outside linebacker given his smaller frame. Braun also has elite explosiveness, blowing away the competition with an unprecedented 99th-percentile 10-yard split, 1.54 seconds.

The Saints added to the offense with their last two picks, securing QB Tommy Stevens and TE Adam Trautman. While Taysom Hill is the backup to Brees and the obvious selection for starting QB once Brees retires, Stevens will get a few years of shadowing both quarterbacks under his belt that should help him grow in the long run. Trautman is another investment in the long run, as he won’t start over Jared Cook in 2020 but may have potential on the horizon in 2021.

The Carolina Panthers started off their 2020 NFL Draft by choosing Auburn’s Derrick Brown with the No. 7 pick. Brown’s size combined with his snap quickness makes him a threat on defense, one that could help disrupt opposing offenses.

Going into the draft, it was clear the Panthers had some holes to fill on the defense. They did just that, using all seven of their draft picks on defensive players.

In the second round, Carolina picked up No. 38 pick Yetur Gross-Matos and No. 64 pick Jeremy Chinn. Gross-Matos, a defensive end out of Penn State, has the potential to eventually be a dangerous defender because of his size, quickness off the snap, and hustle. The Panthers added to their secondary with Chinn, a versatile, athletic safety who played multiple positions at Southern Illinois, has the size of a linebacker, a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, and an impressive vertical.

Cornerback was possibly the team’s biggest need, with no clear No. 1 CB on the roster and Tom Brady now in the division with multiple downfield weapons at his disposal. The Panthers picked up three more corners with Troy Pride Jr., Kenny Robinson, and Stantley Thomas-Oliver III. Thanks to his speed, Pride Jr. has the potential to thrive in man-to-man coverage once he improves his defense at the catch point. Robinson was draft-eligible despite playing in the XFL last season, so has experience that makes him unique compared to his fellow draftees.
