USFL Score, highlights: Michigan Panthers hold off second-half surge from the Pittsburgh Maulers to win 33-21

In a battle of two 1-8 teams, the Michigan Panthers defeat the Pittsburgh Maulers, 33-21, to end their season with another win. Michigan (2-8) will receive the first pick of each round in the 2023 USFL Draft. The Panthers other win this season also came against the Maulers in Week 3, where they shut Pittsburgh out 24-0.

Michigan got out to an early 21-0 lead. Pittsburgh had a second-half surge, getting within a 9-point deficit twice. The Panthers held off the Maulers and a final interception by Jameson Houston clinched the win for Michigan.

The Panthers’ passing game was on display in this matchup. Quarterback Paxton Lynch has been battling an ankle injury but played the entire game today, completing 22 of 30 attempts for 275 yards and 3 touchdown passes. Meanwhile, the Panthers defense forced three Maulers turnovers, including a scoop-and-score for safety Cory Rahman in the first quarter.

Pittsburgh ends their season 1-9, the worst record in the USFL. Their lone win came in Week 5, where they defeated the Houston Gamblers 21-20.

Different coaching styles were be on display in this matchup. Defensive-minded Michigan head coach Jeff Fisher spent 22 years as an NFL head coach with the Oilers/Titans and Rams. This is the 60-year-old’s first time being a head coach at any level. Wilson spent 23 years in the NFL as a running back coach for eight different organizations.

USFL Score, highlights: New Jersey Generals win their ninth straight game with 26-23 victory over the Philadelphia Stars

New Jersey Generals hang on in the fourth quarter to defeat the Philadelphia Stars, 26-23. Today’s extremely physical game was a preview of the North Division semifinal playoff match next week in Canton, Ohio. The Generals are now 2-0 over the Stars, also defeating Philadelphia in Week 3, 24-16. This is the ninth straight win for New Jersey and they finish the regular season with a 9-1 record.

Generals quarterback Luis Perez completed 14 of 18 attempts for 138 yards and 3 touchdown passes —  2 to Alonzo Moore and 1 to Darius Victor. Running back Trey Williams had a standout performance, leading New Jersey on the ground with 114 yards and 61-yard rushing touchdown on the first drive of the game.

Philadelphia ends the regular season with a 6-4 record. Quarterback Case Cookus completed 19 of 33 attempts for 243 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Tight end Bug Howard five receptions for 100 receiving yards on the day.

Head coaches for the Philadelphia Stars and New Jersey Generals

Both teams are led by coaches with extensive experience across multiple levels of football and championships at the professional level. New Jersey is led by 68-year-old Mike Riley, who was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers for three seasons from 1999-2001. His most recent head coaching job came in 2019, where he led the San Antonio Commanders in the AAF. Meanwhile, Philadelphia is led by 64-year-old Bart Andrus. Andrus was the head coach of the Amsterdam Admirals in the NFL Europe league from 2001-2007, leading the team to back-to-back World Bowls and the 2005 title. He has also coached in the CFL, UFL and XFL.

USFL Score, highlights: Tampa Bay Bandits keep playoff hopes alive with 13-3 win over the Houston Gamblers

Tampa Bay continues its bid for the final USFL playoff slot. The Bandits needed to win their final three games to clinch the berth and are off to a positive start with a 13-3 win over the Houston Gamblers.

Tampa Bay (4-4) got out to a 13-0 lead by halftime and held the Gamblers to just one field goal on the day.  After an underwhelming performance in last week’s 20-13 loss to New Jersey, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 12 of 21 attempts for 98 yards, including a touchdown pass to Derrick Dillon, the only touchdown of the day. Bandits kicker Tyler Rausa made two of three field attempts. 

The Houston Gamblers (1-7) were eliminated from playoff contention following last week’s 35-24 loss to the Philadelphia Stars. Kenji Bahar started at quarterback for the Gamblers with Clayton Thorson still out with an elbow injury. Bahar struggled, only completing 19 of 34 attempts. They’ll face the Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers to finish off their season.

The top two teams in each division will advance to the playoffs following the 10-week regular season. The playoff games will take place on Saturday, June 25 in Canton, Ohio.

Head coaches for the Houston Gamblers and Tampa Bay Bandits

The Gamblers are led by 57-year-old Kevin Sumlin, who has experience coaching in Texas. He was the coach at the University of Houston for four years before taking a job at Texas A&M. Meanwhile the Bandits are led by Todd Haley, who spent 22 seasons as an NFL coach, including three seasons with the Chiefs. He has worked as the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals, Steelers and Browns. The Cardinals appeared in Super Bowl XLIII during his tenure. Haley also had coaching stints with the Bears and Cowboys.
