WWE made a big announcement today and it involves an overseas title.
Sadly it’s not the return of the illustrious European Championship, but instead, it’s a big step forward for the biggest wrestling promotion in the world.
A special two-night 16-man tournament will be held on Jan. 14th and 15th to crown the first-ever WWE United Kingdom Champion. The event will air on the WWE Network.
“Our passionate U.K. fans deserve to have their own Champion,” said WWE Executive VP of Talent, Paul Levesque (HHH) said during a press conference at London’s O2 arena. “The tournament is the next step in our ongoing strategy to create localized content for our global WWE Network, develop another brand that engages our passionate fans, and add a new dimension to our on-going storylines.”
The tournament will be conducted in a single-elimination format featuring talent from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Some of the names include: Trent Seven, Pete Dunne, Wolfgang, Jordan Devlin and Roy Johnson.
Former ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness recently signed a deal with WWE and will join Michael Cole at the announcer’s table to call the action on the network.
