NCAA uses ‘Miracle on ice’ speech in March Madness spot

“Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here tonight.”

It’s a line so many hockey fans know well and a line they hold close to their hearts. Herb Brooks not only inspired Team USA in their uphill battle to beat the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics with this speech, but he inspired a nation.

You didn’t have to like hockey or know the “difference between the blue line and a clothesline” to appreciate the magnitude of what Team USA’s upset did for the country. And it’s no wonder why this moment is one of, if not THE, greatest moment in sports history. Everyone loves an underdog. Or perhaps, a Cinderella.

So, kudos to the NCAA for their latest March Madness ad. The jarring black and white images of young kids playing basketball with an overlay of Brooks’ speech will give you chills. And it illustrates just how monumental that speech was and still is today.

It’s not just for hockey fans, it’s for sports fans.

And if that small sampling isn’t enough for you, re-watch young Josh Sacco’s version. It’s equally as inspiring as March Madness continues to roll on.
